We’re fast approaching one of the most popular festivals on the Washington Coast: the annual Long Beach Peninsula Razor Clam Festival. Every spring, thousands of people gather in Long Beach for a unique one-day razor clam extravaganza that initially put our beautiful oceanfront city on the map back in 1940. Lucky participants can enjoy free clam-digging lessons, cleaning demonstrations, clam chowder taste-offs, live music, local craft beer from North Jetty Brewing, and so much more! Combine your razor clam experience with a first-class stay in one of Oceanfront Getaways’ modern Long Beach WA rentals, including the charming ocean-view Journey’s End.
The Annual Razor Clam Festival
The Razor Clam Festival was established in 1940 by a group of locals to celebrate the long-standing tradition of Long Beach Peninsula clamming. As the razor clam population began to dwindle due to exploited beaches, the festival disbanded in 1948. The festival is the home to the self-proclaimed “World’s Largest Frying Pan,” which still stands 14 feet tall near the world-famous “Giant Spitting Clam” in Downtown Long Beach. Surprisingly, the Razor Clam Festival made a comeback in 2013 thanks in large part to regulated clam digging dates.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recently released a tentative clam-digging schedule to include 12 upcoming dates, two of which coincide with the festival weekend. You’ll have to get up bright and early to partake in this year’s clam-digging lesson, which begins promptly at 7:58 a.m. If you are over 15 years of age, you must purchase a three-day or annual razor clam license to dig. Kids under 15 can get their 15-clam limit without a license. Luckily for prospective diggers, our ocean-view and oceanfront Long Beach WA rentals are only minutes away from the beach!
Amateur Chowder Competition / Clam Chowder Taste-Off
The Razor Clam Festival features two can’t-miss cook-offs: the amateur chowder competition and the clam chowder taste-off between some of the best Long Beach WA restaurants. One amateur chef will win $200 for the best chowder at Elks Lodge on Pacific Avenue. After cheering on these amateur chefs, stick around for the clam chowder taste-off, where you’ll get to sample a number of delicious chowders. The $10 entry fee includes a drink, vintage postcard, visitor’s guide, contest drawing entry, and much more! Only 300 participants can partake in this coveted event, so remember to arrive early!
Even More Festivities
After a half day of clam digging and chowder tasting, head down to the North Jetty Beer Garden at Veterans Memorial Park for local craft ales and live music. North Jetty Brewing typically has 16 different beers on tap at the brewery, and they’ll be slinging a number of these classics in the Beer Garden, such as the traditional Vienna lager, the balance “North Head” IPA, and the robust “Semper Paratus” porter. Elsewhere, you can try free clam fritter samples at Veterans Field, get a free face painting at Veterans Memorial Park, and pose for pictures with a wide variety of mascots who will be roaming the downtown streets.
